| I watched "28 Up" today and it was AMAZING. Two thumbs up! Five stars! A++! It's a British documentary that tapes and interviews people at age 7, 14, 21, 28, etc. 35 Up and 42 Up are also out, but I haven't seen those yet. The 7 year-olds are *adorable*. Three upper class men were especially interesting. At age 7, they all knew they wanted to go to the best boarding schools and the best law colleges (i.e. Oxbridge). Two of them did end up as lawyers. (One seemed nice, the other, not so much.) The third disappointingly didn't test into Oxbridge, started out as a journalist and ended up working at the BBC as a documentary maker, which, in my opinion, is the coolest job of all. Further proof that the prestige thing is completely overrated. On the other hand, one suburbanite who also didn't test into Oxbridge ended up homeless, penniless and insane. So, I dunno, it's all up in the air. It was incredible how much the 7 year-olds resembled their later selves. (People, we don't change! Is that good? Bad?) And for everybody, it was education, marriage and career that determined their life situations. I mean, that may seem pretty obvious, but it's weird to me that *three* things would determine your *whole* life. The middle and upper class people were more "lost" than their lower class counterparts, who I thought had a better work ethic and seemed more contented. The upper and middle class people didn't really know what to do with themselves. (Sound familiar?) Y'all go watch it! They're making an American version too. | | |
| Hi world. Mike is moving into his room in our apartment. He's diligently unpacking his mountains of boxes, while I watch him lazily and occassionally walk into my room to take naps, careful to maneuver around the two suitcases that will eventually unpack themselves if I wish hard enough. Carrying box after box from the car into the apartment makes me hate stuff: any and all stuff. Most of it is totally useless. Makes me never want to buy anything ever again. But I did promise him an X-Box for his birthday, which I tried to make good today. Did y'all know that America has *run out* of X-Boxes? Best Buy was out, as was Target and Toys R Us. I hope prices don't go up. If you give an IOU as a birthday present, and the price goes up, are you obligated for the original price, or the higher price? What would Ms. Manners say? Who takes on the market risk? Me, right? X-Box people: hold off on that price hike! | | |
| Murder law is really interesting.
A warning to people who mess with me: watch out! :o) | | |
